Ulrike Zabel draws with pencil and colored pencil on paper. Out of her imagination, abstract formations emerge in the process, closely connected to her observations of the everyday and her memories of things. Working intuitively, probing and examining, the artist develops delicate “drawing fabrics” from dense, repetitive structures. The aspect of omission or cessation plays a central role in this process. The characteristics of the paper are just as important as the autonomy of the lines, which create textures, forms, and spaces that often point beyond what is depicted. With her multilayered compositions, Ulrike Zabel not only explores the possibilities of drawing as a medium but also brings to the fore inherent qualities such as sensuality, rhythm, and movement.
